Here's what Jeff thinks the tech sector will bring us in 2021 Each year, I like to have a look at the huge picture and predict what's just around the corner. Longtime readers of my work know that I follow the most interesting tech patterns on the edge of mass adoption.
These patterns are experiencing rapid growth and developing incredible opportunities for investors. 5G Devices Our new 5G (fifth-generation) cordless networks are a subject I've been covering for years now.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains last year, an impressive 250 million 5G-enabled devices were still sold. Specifically in the 2nd quarter, there were supply chain disturbances, making delays, and work blockages. And all of this ultimately resulted in Apple delaying the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by 2 months.
And that need is now going to be pressed into 2021. I predict that more than 500 million 5G devices will be delivered in 2021.
Stage 3 of 5G When I have actually talked about 5G in the past, I've described its three different stages. In Stage One, the facilities of these brand-new networks is constructed out, consisting of all the new towers and fiber-optic wiring that 5G will require. In Phase 2, 5G devices go on sale.
And in Stage Three, 5G services start to be used. That's when we start to see applications working on 5G networks. Consider things like enormous multiplayer video games over a cellphone. That's not possible with 4G. It will be with 5G. And my 2nd 5G prediction for 2021 is that we will start Phase 3 by this summer.
However they will care if there are amazing applications that can just be accessed with a 5G phone. So a growing number of customers will head out to buy a 5G phone to gain access to these applications. That causes more 5G apps being established. In fact, 5G is going to open up a suite of amazing applications: self-driving automobiles, the Web of Things, robotic surgery, and more.
The financial investment chances moving forward will be enormous. 3. CRISPR Genetic Modifying Stepping far from 5G, the next important technology I predict in 2021 is CRISPR genetic editing. CRISPR stands for "clustered frequently interspaced brief palindromic repeat." It's a mouthful. However it is among the most amazing advancements in biotechnology.
